Buying guide

Inflatable water slides, from racing lanes to splash pools.

Picked by Chip H. · Updated · 12 picks

Twelve inflatable water slides, each drawn to scale with the lawn it needs, from a 10.8 foot splash castle to a 17.7 foot double slide with its own dinosaur pool.

Every unit here sprays water from a garden hose while a blower keeps it up, so plan the spot around an outlet and a spigot as well as open grass. The manuals we read, from Little Tikes, Action Air and Bounceland, all ask for 2 meters (6.6 feet) of clear space around the unit, and Little Tikes counts the space overhead too.

The sections split them by what kids do on them: race down double lanes, climb to a single slide, or splash in a pool that's the main event. Where a listing and its manual disagree, we've gone with the manual and said so on the card. For what a weekend of this does to your grass, read how to choose.

A 12 by 12 foot water slide inside its clear zone Top-down plan: the unit sits in the middle of a dashed zone 6.6 feet wider on every side, about 26 by 26 feet overall. 26 ft 26 ft 6.6 ft Clear zone 12 × 12 ft the unit
To scale: the Rocky Mountain River Race (12 × 12 ft by its manual) plus 6.6 ft of clear space on every side is a 26 × 26 ft patch of lawn, rounded up. Every card below is drawn the same way, at the same 32 ft scale as our bounce house guides.

Double lanes, side by side.

Two slides next to each other, so kids race down together instead of queueing at the top. With clearance, plan on 26 to 31 feet of lawn the long way.

Our pick for racing

Little Tikes Rocky Mountain River Race

Footprint
12 × 12 ft
With clearance
26 × 26 ft
Weight limit
350 lb total
Ages
5 to 10

Two racing slides either side of a climbing wall, with a bucket at the top that tips water onto whoever is climbing, all running into one shared pool. Little Tikes' manual gives it as 12 by 12 feet and the listing as about 14 by 13.5, so we've drawn the manual's figure; ages start at 5, older than most here.

How to choose an inflatable water slide.

Plan for the water, not just the space

Measure for the clear zone, then find the outlet and the spigot, because the blower runs for as long as the hose does. Little Tikes' manual rules out extension cords, so the outlet has to be close. Heights here run from 6 feet on the Bounceland to 9.2 on the COCOFISH and WELLFUNTIME, and with a pool involved every manual we read asks for an adult watching at all times; children can drown in very little water.

An honest word about your lawn

A water slide is a heavy, wet sheet with a pool on top, and the grass under it gets no light while it's up. Action Air's manual says not to leave its slide inflated overnight and to empty the pool when it's not in use; Little Tikes wants two to four people to drain and move its unit, with the water sent to a dry part of the yard. Take it down at the end of each day and the lawn usually recovers; leave it up all weekend and expect a pale, soggy rectangle for a while.
